Modern recycling processes make it possible for, for example, deposit bottles that consumers have put into the reverse vending machines in supermarkets to be shredded, cleaned, and pressed into small bales. These bales or chips are then melted down and spun into polyester threads, which can then be used again to manufacture new products, from garden furniture and pallets to household and kitchen appliances and textiles of all kinds.

Handed By products are mainly manufactured in Vietnam and China. These are two countries with centuries of expertise in handicraft techniques, but also with typical Asian traditions and customs. This requires respect, understanding, and patience. Many of the people living there earn their main income from working in rice fields or with cows, poultry, and fruit farming on their small farms. They live with their children, parents, and grandparents under one roof. To improve their livelihoods, some mothers and grandmothers weave bags and baskets for Handed By after work. They can integrate the weaving freely into their daily routine and work at home, far away from mass production in factories. When the baskets and bags are finished, they are brought to a collection point where they are inspected and cleaned, and the finishing touches are applied. From a central warehouse, they are packed and shipped to the Netherlands. Handed By thus offers work to skilled craftswomen.
